my steering wheel does not lock in place when the key is removed. also experienced a problem with the shift lever being stuck in Park but wiggled it a bit and it came out of park and into drive. is the problem the ignition switch or something else?

Sounds like the ignition switch, or possibly the shift lock cable system. They are both likely related, but it will need to be checked to determine where the fault lies.

thanks, bretb. if I replace the ignition switch do the keys need to be reprogrammed at the dealership?

I don't know the answer to that, I assume they do need to be programmed, but I'm not sure.
