Question: Steering column noise in cold weather

Question

Purchased new in 2001. About 3 years later (still under warranty) I took it to the Chrysler dealership for a noise (rubbery squeak) when turning the steering either way. No affect on drivability, just obnoxious. It took them 10 minutes, no charge, noise went away, and didn't return until last year. It seems related to the temperature... cooler temps: squeak. When it warms up: no squeak. For a dealership to fix anything so quickly, and for free, surely must have involved WD-40!!! The dealer is "no more" so I can't ask them. Can anyone tell me if this can be home remedied and where it's coming from? Thank you in advance.

There could be a rubber bushing at the steering shaft that could be chafed and dry - this is what they could have lubed. Or a tie rod end may be dry and squeaking, needing lubed or replaced.

I would look closely at all the steering coimponents from the column to the underside of the vehicle to the gear and lubricate moving parts.
