car did not start.disconnected battery and recharged. hooked up battery cable and without turning key starter began to turn over again. no diagnostic lights other than normal when moving key to start position.

MasterRemove the smaller of the two wires from the starter motor, put a volt meter or test light on it to see if it has power (12 volts) with the ignition key of or in the first two positions. It should not or the ignition switch circuit is shorted, most likely the switch has failed under this circumstance if it does have a short removing the small wire will make the starter disengage.
If the small wire is removed and the starter is still engaged and the starter still runs the starter is shorted internally and will have to be removed and examined.Flag ThisLike0
