My Tacoma kept trying to start even after I pulled the key out. Made a thrashing sound when started, so pulled key out and then thrashing sound stopped, but starter motor still kept the engine turning over. Disconnected the battery to get it stopped. Pulled the starter relay and checked it on the bench and seemed to work OK. What do I do from here?

Can you give me a general procedure if it requires removing the starter motor?

Checked voltage at wire (not battery cable) leading to motor. Observed no voltage, which indicated that when key was out voltage was not being sent to motor; so removed key switch and starter relay from immediate consideration. Figured it must be the starter motor sticking and closing the contacts sending voltage directly from battery. Hit it with a hammer and it became unstuck and worked normally. Replaced starter motor and works fine. Credit to others who made suggestions on how to check it out and temporary fix
