starter motor on 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500

if the ground wire is not connected to the back of starter but connected to the frame will that affect the performance of the starter and will that give you a clicking noise/ won't start after truck is hot

All grounds need to be connected to a clean surface, i would check that and make sure its not attached to paint or undercoating if that is the case move to a clean metal area.
