this problem is intermittent. It doesn't do it all of the time, and so far have been able to get it to start after a few tries.

1993 Volvo 850
Question: starter and solenoid don't want to start

This applies to 850's with an automatic transmission: When the problem occurs, try starting the vehicle in neutral, also try moving the shifter through all the gears a few times, then try starting the car. If this seems to work, then the gear position sensor is going bad, which is very common on this car. I have seen the starters fail too, but it is much less common. Another possibility is the electrical portion of the ignition switch, which also fails.
