1993 Volvo 850 Q&A

1993 Volvo 850 Question: starter and solenoid don't want to start

this problem is intermittent. It doesn't do it all of the time, and so far have been able to get it to start after a few tries. -

This applies to 850's with an automatic transmission: When the problem occurs, try starting the vehicle in neutral, also try moving the shifter through all the gears a few times, then try starting the car. If this seems to work, then the gear position sensor is going bad, which is very common on this car. I have seen the starters fail too, but it is much less common. Another possibility is the electrical portion of the ignition switch, which also fails. -
