Stagecoach Auto Repair
October 17, 2012

When you are in the middle of a 5,000 mile odyssey around America the Beautiful, and your car dies in a small Tennessee town south of Nashville, you are tempted to throw in the towel, cancel the rest of our vacation and fly home.

I cannot believe my incredible good fortune when the tow truck hauled us into Spring Hill where gas station owner recommended that we should have the tow truck take us to Monte at the Stagecoach garage.

Now I am no neophyte when it comes to car repair, being a DIYer for over 50 years. I had already mentally diagnosed the problem and thought it would probably cost about $1,500. I told Monte what I thought the problem, and what I had estimated the cost would be. (I just wanted him to know that I was no dumb tourist ready for fleecing.)

Later that day, Monte called me at the motel. Dreading that the cost was about to skyrocket. I was therefore stunned when he told me that my diagnosis was not only wrong, but would cost about $300, most of which was time-consuming labor. Since he knew we had difficult to obtain for the Grande Ol' Opry the next night, he said his mechanics wanted to work overtime (at "straight time" so it would be ready in time to go to the Opry.

I cannot pile on enough praise for the Stagecoach garage and Monte himself (I never did know his last name). But I did learn a lot about "Southern gentlemen" and the well-deserved praise of "Southern Hospitality".
