2007 Honda Civic Question: Squealing noise

Question

I keep hearing a squealing noise that randomly comes and goes. It doesn't see to be associated with the air conditioner. It also doesn't seem to be associated with the brakes. Sometimes its preceded by a metallic knocking sound.

Are you still under manufacturer's warranty? This is unusual, and if you are under warranty, I'd make an appointment at your dealership and have them find what's wrong and fix it.

It is hard to guess at the source of a noise without being able to drive a car first hand to experience the noise. Next time you hear the sound try to identify what area of the car the noise is coming from and under what circumstances you hear the noise. Do you hear the noise only on initial starting of the engine or when electrical loads are turned on or the steering is cranked fully one side or the other, any of these may be a sign of a loose or worn fan belt. An intermittent metalic high pitched noise almost like fingers being rubbed on a chalk board may be first occurring on backing up from rest, driving forward from stop or taking slight turns may be a sign of the brake pad wear indicator coming in contact with the bake disc. This is a designed wear limit to alert the driver that the brakes need to be inspected. Check the basic fluid levels in the engine compartment, engine oil, power steering fluid level ect.....
It is best to get this checked out as it may be inexpensive to fix now but could result in more serious problems later if left unattended.

I have the same sort of problem.. A spinning/squealing noise started on Saturday after several hours driving (unable to recreate it on short journeys since). Seems to be coming from the back of the car but couldn't be 100% sure where as was driving at the time. The noise only occurs when I have no feet on the pedals (i.e. motorway driving) as soon as I depress the accelerator even slightly or the the brakes the noise stops and then starts again when no pedals are depressed... Any ideas??
I'm supposed to be driving to the South of France tomorrow!
