1996 Lexus LS400 Question: speedometer stopped working

Is the check engine light on, if so see if the cruise control works, if it doesn't the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is probably bad and will have a code stored in the computer in your car saying so. You need a scan tool to retrieve the code from a diagnostic socket under the dash. If Check Engine light is not on the instrument cluster itself may be the problem.

WRONG ANSWERS. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT HIT THE DASH OR THE INSTRUMENTAL CLUSTER. I HAVE HAD THREE LEXUS.....SAME PROBLEM. THE INSTRUMENTAL CLUSTER IS GOING BAD. SOMETIMES IT WILL CLICK IN GEAR AND MOST TIMES NOT......YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE CLUSTER WHICH IS REALLY CHEAP.......THE ONLY PROBLEM YOU WILL HAVE AFTER THAT IS IF YOU GOING TO SALE THE CAR?????? YOU WILL HAVE A MILEAGE DISCREPENCY......JUST PUT THE OLD DASH BACK IN AND TELL THE PERSON THAT YOU GOING TO SALE IT TO ABOUT THE MILEAGE...PLEASE DON'T LIE TO PEOPLE IT WILL COME BACK AND GET YOU.
