Speedometer on 2004 Chevrolet Impala

My speedometer has stopped working. It was irratic for awhile. The dial has gone below zero, but it still seems to register (and move the dial) as I speed up. What could the problem be?

The most likely cause is an internal problem with the cluster. If this is the case the cluster will need to be removed and sent to a special repair shop for repair or to get an exchange unit. Please have your problem properly diagnosed before any repairs a made. Please use the following line to find a shop near you - http://repairpal.com/directory?address=08078&car_brand_names=Chevrolet

This is very common on the 03-06 GMs. The cause is the motors behind the gauges are failing, they all go out eventually. You can get it repaired here - www.drspeedometer.com and there's a DIY guide here - www.howtorepairmyinstrumentcluster.com
