Question: Spark plug removal

Question

Visitor, 2.2L 4 Cylinder, Riverside, CA, May 31, 2011, 12:14

One of my plugs cannot be removed. I tried an extention on my torque wrench and broke my 3/8 rod. Can I drop some dry ice in the plug well and shrink the plug or will that crack the block? The 3 plugs I removed look OK for 7800 miles.

Sounds like is seized in aluminum head. That happens when a previous tech did not use anti seize on the plug threads when last installed. I would try a 1/2" socket and extension with 1/2" ratchet and see if can at least break loose. Likely will be pulling threads out with the plug if it comes out and then head removal. I have heard of using heli coils for repair of threads but not a fan of that.

I solved my own problem. I had a 24 inch extension on my torque wrench. That did it. But the threads were in bad shape, probably crossed when I put in the plug. A new plug went in without much trouble and I used no-sieze on the plug. Now a different proble in that one cylinder. The plug was sopping wet with oil so next step is to check that.

Should have chased the threads when plug was out to clean them and use lots of grease on the tap to try and catch the metal flakes and then blow the hole out with air. Then did a wet test on that cylinder to see if oil prob is valve guides and seals or piston rings.
