when i go to pass somebody my car just seems to not have the power it should, you have to punch it to pass anybody. The gas mileage is not that great i think i get about 16 mpg i know it can do better. Also when its up in higher rpms it puts out black smoke enough to notice and sometimes it will idle rough i put new spark plugs in it that seem to help but it still has a problem and the check engine light is on. any ideas?
-- thanks Matt

The first step would be to find out why the check engine light is on. The black smoke is caused by to much fuel - the engine is running rich and the excess fuel is going out the tail pipe in the form of black smoke. That would also explain your poor fuel mileage. Knowing the code(s) that are causing your check engine light to be on should help in determining the cause of your problems.

You have excessive fuel consumption because your engine coolant temp sensor is telling the pcm that the temp is -40, this keeps the vehicle in open loop trying to get the engine up to operating temp around 190, change that sensor which is located next to the thermastat run it on the highway for a day and if that doesn't work put a scope on the oxygen sensor and see if the rich emissions have clogged it.
