2005 Subaru Forester Question: short rod assembly

Makes a tinny vibrating noise on cold start only. Otherwise runs perfect. Mechanic says he "hears" an internal engine noise, thinks it needs a 'short rod assembly'. 2 days work and $4000.00. HELP! What is this? They originally said it sounded like a loose heat shield.

Thank you for your advice. This was what the Subaru dealer mechanic said. If no action taken, he said it would continue to worsen and basically screw up the entire engine. The car starts and this shaky noise is part of the start, it happens for about 3 seconds at the end of the start when started cold, no break of silence between start and this vibrating tinny noise.

    Hello,
There are allot of different sources for noise. If a qualified technician has not inspected yet you will definitely want to start there. A tinny rattle is common to come from the exhaust heat shields and their clamps. A "short rod" is not a good description of a part or assembly. What that individual may have been referencing is a "piston-slap" noise which is not harmful and is present on several different engines. If this is the noise that is of concern I would not recommend to do anything as it is strictly a noise, usually only after start up when cold and is very costly to repair with updated and over sized parts.

Start with the basics and have a professional check it out for you. Get a diagnosis with a repair estimate, than a description of what will happen if no action is taken.

Feel free to stop by or schedule an appointment, we can help.
