2000 Ford Taurus Question: Shifting out of park

Question

My car sat over the summer but when I tried to use it, I couldn't get it to shift out of park. I have to really work at it, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. One note, the brakes need to be bled, could this possibly cause the problem?

These vehicles have a shift lock that prevents the shifter from moving out of park without your foot on the brake pedal. I would make sure the system is functioning properly.
The brake pedal and brake light switch are the only shared components with the shift-lock system, so it's possible if the brake pedal is going to the floor, it may have affected the brake light switch adjustment and it's no longer working, so check your brake lights first and address them if there not working.
