my 5 speed hesitates and sputters like it is choking when i change gears

• Key stuck in ignition/gear shift knob won't push in
  ...it home, but could not remove the key from the ignition. Now I can easily mover the shifter. Brake lights work. Any ideas on how to fix this? How serious of a problem is this?
