shifter on 2001 Ford Escape

I have a 2001 Ford escape V6 automatic transmission. My problem is that the gear shift will not go into any gear when I start it up. The shifter feels very loose and it just goes up and down. Please help!!

The most likely cause of your concern is either a broken shift cable or a broken shifter mechanism. More than likely, it will have to be towed to a repair facility for a look.

I know you probably have it fixed by now but the same thing happened to me. The shifter cable needs to be replaced. You can manually change the gear under the hood but you would have to have someone with you.
