Is your car manual transmission or automatic? If manual transmission (and you are having problems getting the clutch to disrupt the drive between the engine and transmission) check the fluid level in the clutch fluid resiviour (located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment looking into the engine just next to the brake master cylinder resiviour). If the fluid level is low there is a leak perhaps in the clutch master cylinder (which may show signs of fluid leaking at the top of the clutch pedal area) or a leak at the clutch slave cylinder.
