I've got a Toyota that has always been quite dependable, until the last week - sometimes it would start, sometimes it wouldn't. I took it to the local tire & auto place about a mile from my house and left it for the day. They called me up and said the starter was bad. Made sense to me. They called back about two hours later and said they replaced the starter and I could pick it up. I got there, paid the bill, and went to the lot to get my car. It didn't start. I went back in and told them what occurred. They said it may just be a bad starter; sometimes that happens. The problem was, they said, it was late and I'd have to leave it for another day. I agreed and the next day they called to say it was done - again. I went to get it and it wouldn't start - again. Then they wanted to charge additional diagnostic fees AND would not take off the starter which, apparently, was NOT the problem. Why? Something about electrical parts being non-refundable, etc, etc. What really ticked me off was I couldn't even get credit against what they charged already! Fuming, I walked the mile home and got on CraigsList. I read some ads, made some calls, but the only one that seemed to have some definitive ideas was Shaw Mobile Auto Service. Their guy came out to the tire place, and, with my help, we pulled it off their property to a parking lot next door. He did some tests and then said, "just a sec". He did something with the cable near the battery and it started right up! I was charged $100 for everything, as compared to the $500 I paid the other guys, and it hasn't failed since. I know who to call from now on...
