Service Reminder Indicator Light on 2002 Toyota Corolla

I have not had any problems with this car. The service indicator light just came on. My mileage is 22,800. The owner's manual says check maintenance but does not say what maintenance. Please let me know what service may be required. Thanks!

Check your owner's manual to see if it is a maintenance reminder or a Check Engine light (sometimes called Malfunction Indicator Lamp, MIL). If it is the check engine light, a qualified shop will need to scan for trouble codes. If it is a basic maintenance reminder, you may only need an oil and filter change. It's hard to say

Toyota Corollas from 2005 onward has a "oil change due light" that is reset after each oil change. Is the light that is "remaining on" on your car, a yellow colored icon that is the outline image of an engine? If so the car's computer sees a fault in the emission control system that may effect the way the engine runs, which could lead to damage if left neglected. As Andy said a scan tool is needed to determine what has caused the vehicle's computer to have illuminate the "Check Engine Light".
