It is bad terminology from Nissan (also used by Mitsubishi and other car manufacturers). It shows a fault in the emission system not a car requiring maintenance. If the Check Engine/Service Engine Soon light comes on a code or pending code is stored in the computer of your car .We have three scan tools where I work each has its own strengths and occasionally one will read what the other won't. If the computer in your car sees that the fault is no longer there and certain drive cycle criteria is met the computer in your car will turn out the light and erase the "trouble code" from its memory. Often a gas cap is not properly tightened or some glitch occurred, the computer alerts the driver it saw a problem, monitors the system to see if the problem is on going, but will turn the light out if the problem is not seen again or has been corrected.
