2002 Nissan Altima

Question: Service engine light is on.

 Rookie

My service engine light is on. And I ran the diagnostics at auto parts shop and error code came up as P0420. How serious is the problem and what could be estimated cost for the repair.

  hello , the code p0420 has to do with the catalytic converter effieciecy , this code means 1 of 2 things .. 1 you eithier have a bad o2 sensor after the cat or you have a bad cat ,, my suggestion to you would be to replace the 02 sensor , because it is much cheaper, if that does not fix the problem then you will have to replace the cat itself , witch could range anywhere form 700.00 to 1200.00... this will not cause any problems as far as the car runs nor damage anything , however you check engine light will remain on until you have it repaired
