service engine light on 2002 BMW X5

about 2 days ago my service engine soon light came on and remains on. just prior to this light the check filler cap light came on but was replaced by the service engine light. Are the two events related. Secondly, if my car exceeds the mileage for an oil change will this trigger the service engine light? Thanks

Chances are the fuel filler cap light and the service engine light are related. Checking fault codes stored in the powertrain control module will help to confirm this. A loose or faulty gas cap will trigger the check filler cap light. A gas cap issue will also trigger the service engine light due to an EVAP system failure. Not changing your engine oil should NOT turn on the service engine soon light but may trigger the maintenance reminder light.
