We replaced the belt on my car about 10 days ago. Was running absolutely great. It has recently started to squeal. At first it was right when I turned the car on, and then it would stop. It would start back up if the heat was turned on and I was accelerating. Yesterday, it started without a noise and then a block later started to squeal every time I accelerated. It stopped when the car was idling though. The battery gauge then went all the way down and the light came on. Car ran fine the rest of the way home, just a horrible constant squealing noise. We're not sure if it is because the tension isn't right or if it is something more serious. Is this something that if it isn't fixed immediately will cause progress and cause more damage.

Sounds like a simple solution, tighten the belt. It should have very little deflection. But be careful, there is a fine line on not tight enough and to tight. You can cause bearing damage if it is to tight.
