Why don't my seat belt retractors catch when pulling on them violently to see if they would work in an accident? Other cars catch when testing them but the camry continues to unwind no matter how fast one pulls.

The belt should catch when you tug on them. Do both the front seat belts on your car react in the same way? Seat belts are a key safety item with liability attached. I would go to a Toyota dealer and ask there opinion on how the belts are operating and see if it is there opinion the belts need to be replaced.
