hearing a scratching/grinding noise on the first attempt of the day to start the car. Sounds like the same noise you get when you hold the key too long after the engine starts. Doesn't seem to happen after I've been driving. The noise will happen when I turn the ignition, right before releasing the key. Is this the starter or ignition going?

Sounds like the flywheel may have some teeth missing from it. Or the starter may have an internal issue. Or both. The starter should be removed and the engine turned to inspect the teeth of the flywheel. If teeth are damaged or missing, it will need to be replaced. The starter should be inspected too.
