Is the liftgate rusting or is it just the trim piece? Maybe the paint was scratched the last time it was fixed and was susceptible to rusting. Rust or corrosion should definitely be repaired before it gets too bad

I have the same problem with my 06 runner sr5. It seems to be a problem with the nuts used to atatch the chrome toyota emblem to the gate. The nuts rust causing oxidation in the paint causing it to fail. Thus causing rust in the gate itself. I will be replacing the nuts with stainless ones and proforming the necesary paint repair to fix the minimal rust. None the less this is one nice machine. Love my Runner.
