Rough idle can be caused by an engine misfire, a vacuum leak, or some kind of internal engine issue - like valves that have excessive clearance and need adjusted.

Overheating can be from a faulty sticking thermostat, a cooling fan that isn't working, or some kind of coolant flow issue. It can also be from an internal engine coolant leak.
