2001 Chevrolet Malibu Question: Reporting on what happened to my car yesterday. No lights came on at all.

Yesterday I got in it and it started up like it always does, went to work. Got in it at 5:00 and tried to turn the key and it sounded like it wanted to turn over, but wouldn't. Called AAA had it towed to my mechanic who was closed by that time. This morning I stopped by my mechanic and told him what happened. He just now called me & said it's the tumbler-anti-theft ignition switch. The entire assembly must be replaced. I can still use my keys however. $272 for parts & $200 labor. Approx. 3 hour job @ $65/hr. labor. I never had any type of warning at all, no lights came on...nothing. Not happy at all ~

Did anyone even try a jump start before towing? You said it SOUNDED like wanted to turn over, did the engine attempt to crank or the key would not turn to the start position? We need more info. on this one!!! Did you approve the work?

I thought maybe the tow guy would've tried that but he didn't. My battery is only a year old, but yes, it could've been drained, but doubtful. My mechanic checked my battery/cables and everything was fine. When he put it on the diagnostics this AM, that's when he discovered the Tumbler anti-theft device had to be replaced. I am discovering on the internet lots of people have had this problem (GM), but they refuse to acknowledge it...Mmmm go figure. The key turns fine, it's the engine that won't "turn over". I'm just wondering why my "anti-theft" light didn't come on if that were the case. When I say "lights" I mean "warning lights", not head lights! My mechanic is good about itemizing everything on my receipt, so once I pick it up, I will let you know what exactly was done and the cost. Thanks!
