Question: replacing brakes

When do brakes need to be replaced? Car has 40,000 miles. front brakes 8MM rear brakes 5MM Brake pedal goes down quite a bit when braking.

    Its a good idea to replace the pads early because as they get thinner you take a chance of one of the pads failing and having contact with the brake rotor then instead of just needing brake pad replacement now you need to have the rotor resurfaced or replaced$$$ and always use quality pads and if you use the mycar page on repairpal you can keep track of all your service records.
