Question: Replaced cat converter , check engine light came back on

Question

Visitor, 4.0L V6, Gordonsville, VA, January 12, 2011, 12:50

100k miles mechanic said replace cat converter because check engine light is on. replaced cat coverter light goes out. now back on after 10 miles! What now?

    if he used an aftermarket converter, then that's the reason. you need a factory or California certified converter. ask your shop what kind of converter they used.

    Probably did. it was only $200 installed. The check engine light was on before the repair. So the only option is to have a factory part installed? Could it be the o2 sensors? If so can you tell which one or would you replace all of them (2 or 3) Thanks Roy

    The only way you know if a catalyst monitor sensor (not O2 sensors)has failed is to monitor it with a scan tool- unless of course you want to throw guesses at it. As Roy stated, it probably is a low quality catalytic convertor that is the cause of the check engine light.

    What would you do? What should I expect from the mechanic?

    A scan tool is needed to monitor the catalyst monitors which readings are compared to the 02 sensors to determine the efficiency of the catalytic convertors. This is how we diagnose the system.
