2000 Mercury Villager Question: removing timing cover

I am replacing the thermostat and the manaul says to remove the timing cover ,but the back of the cover is behind the camshaft gears and can not be moved without removing the gears . there is not enough room to get the thermostat housing out . My question is how do you remove the thermostat housing ? -
