I was told by a Chevy mechanic years ago to use a piece of vacuum line about 3" long and place it on the tip of the plug. When you find the plugs hole use the vacuum line to feel around for the threads to catch and turn it in at least one complete round to make sure you are not cross threaded. Then remove the vacuum line and finish with your ratchet and socket. If you can't turn at least one round by hand don't try to force it with the ratchet, unscrew and try until you get it.
