my pick up has 250k+ miles, recent engine overhaul. rear end noise started about 2k miles ago and has continued to worsen. there is alot of play (slop) when transition from acceleration to deceleration and vise versa. the high pitched noise from the differential area is getting worse. I can smell what seems to be burnt 90 weight oil when I come to a stop.

MasterYou probably can get away with having the ring and pinion changed and any bearings that are worn but if you keep driving it and it comes apart and destroys the differential housing then you'll be force to get a used rear end
