How difficult is it to replace the pinion seal yourself? Is this something I should take to a repair shop? How do I know it's the pinion seal and not something else?

Many of these repairs are fairly easy, but it generally takes some experience to become comfortable with the repairs. There are a lot of little things you learn along the way that you cant find in a book, like installing a seal correctly so it doesn't leak, properly tightening bolts and determining where problems are or are about to occur. That said, fixing your own vehicle is very rewarding, so if you are going to do it, invest in a good repair manual, purchase good quality tools and research before performing the job.
