Question: radio only works when battery is on

when i turn my key so that the battery is on most of the time the radio will come on and work perfectly but when i turn the engine of the car on the radio wont work at all. is this fixable or do i need a new radio?

    before you spend money, check the power and ground to the radio. could be too much or not enough voltage or an insufficient ground. with the car running the voltage goes up (bad alternator can spike a radio) but extra things coming on may starve the power or ground that the radio needs to operate.

    My 1996 Jetta did the same thing I took my volt meter and the the constint power only was reading 4 volts. Turns out it was the radio fuse on the fuse box. It also made my tripometer and clock reset everytime I turned the key off.
