Question: Rack & Pinion Leakage

Rookie

Noted a small amount of clear fluid under mid right front axle. Thought probable cracked CV boot--went to get oil change and asked technician to check it out. Am told this is a rack & pinion failure/leak. Any information about this would be helpful.
Got car at 57K and am now at 64K. had clean Carfax and independant inspection at ASCE cert Independant.

Napa has rebuilt steering racks for $579 plus a core charge that is refundable when the old unit is returned http://www.napaonline.com/default.aspx and the time to remove and replace is about 3 hours

You said it had clear fluid leak. The vent tube for the heating and air conditioning box is on the firewall on the passenger side. I wonder if this is what you see. It is normal for the system to drip water when the a/c is on. Are you loosing power steering fluid or having to top up the power steering fluid resivior?
Power steering fluid would leave red fluid on the ground or redish brown. CV boot grease is black and tends to trow the grease all around the hub and CV joint area.

On the passenger side? sounds more like the power steering fluid reservoir leaking. Maybe I am wrong but my power steering steering gear is on the drivers side and that is where it would leak if you need a new rack n pinion.
