Question: RACK AND PINION PLUS GASKET OIL LEAKS AT 40,000 MILES????

Rookie

Bought the car new. Never had a problem. Drive it to and from work (13 miles each way) 5 days a week. That is all. Have 40,000 miles on it, and after one month following service, leaked 5.5 quarts of oil. Took it right into Crysler, and was told rack and pinion leaking as well as a few gaskets for the oil leaks. Should this be happening to a car that is so well taken care of?

You did not mention what kind of oil leaked out of the vehicle. Sounds like you may have an issue with the shop who performed the work. The engine holds 5 qts of oil, the transmission 9 quarts, the Power steering 2.5 pts. You power steering (rack and pinion) could not have leaked 5.5 quarts. look elsewhere.

The engine leaked the 5 quarts of oil. the rack and pinion leaked a significant amount to have to be replaced. It ended up costing 1300 dollars. Thank goodness I have GEICO power train. Only cost me 250 deductable.
