My 02 mustang gt was making a clicking noise about a year ago. I took it into the shop and was told that I needed to replace the rack and pinion. I have about 80,000 miles on my car. The shop "fixed" the rack and pinion, but I began to hear the clicking again a few months ago. Is it possible for a rack and pinion to go out within a year of being replaced? Or was it done incorrectly?

2002 Ford Mustang GT Question: Rack and Pinion Lifespan

most replacement racks have lifetime warranties. check with the place that replaced the unit.
the life depends greatly on your servicing. the power steering needs to be flushed out every 40 k or so. if you have not done it, then it will fail early.

I can not comment on how well the fix was on a previous repair. We do not repair or overhaul rack and pinions- just replace them (except for the tie rod ends) I do know that the rack and pinion mounting bolts that go through sleeves is a common issue that makes a clicking noise with this model.
