I had my oil changed at one of our local repair shops, then he informed me my front brakes needed changingmthis he did. next day my steering wheel started tightning and turning became a problem, I assumed it was the new brakes. Then my check engine light came on. I went back to the repair shop, he was not surprised to see me, when i told him the problem etc. he went straight to steering reservoir, and informed me I had to replace my "rack and pinion" suspicious or what? I've had quotes from the low $400.00 to the high $800.00 How is that possible? Thank you!!

I think you've been had, Sorry. You did'nt specify the exact "Brake work" you had. What was done? Did that shop also perform a brake flush? Your next day steering
problem may be a coincident: But looking at the steering fluid reservoir does'nt
justify their quick diagnosis! The engine light appearance can have numerous
reasons in your car, among them an ABS issue. Did they do a Scan test to find the
reason for the Engine light issue? Did they tell you about any Fail Codes?
Use your 'Noodle', 'called common sense! Any leaks at the steering rack- pump-
or lines ? Get a 5th opinion ! A hint : Go to an AAmco Store and get a free Engine
light check ! Let them show you the Fail code.

I would certainly get another opinion. It is unfortunate a place that had your car on a rack to change the engine oil and replace the brakes should have taken a moment to note other necessary maintenance or needed repairs they had seen.
I have to give them the benefit of the doubt as most people in this industry are not out to deceive people. The problems happening the day after you had repairs done I am sure are coincidental.
If the power steering resiovior was empty (steering difficult to turn and groaning sound heard on turns) it is necessary to inspect the source or sources of the leaks. I have seen the power steering high pressure hose at the firewall and pump also to leak so make sure all the leaks are fixed at once (may require washing the engine to clean and pinpoint the source of the leaks).
A scan tool is required to see why the Check Engine light has come on. Evaporative Emission System problems, O2 sensor heater circuit and perhaps catalytic efficiency odes are the most common problems on this car.
The parts you are being quoted for are re manufactured. Ask the garage have they fitted this brand of steering rack before and have they had any problems with them. There are many brands of re manufacturers that have a high rate of return, (ask what the warentee is on the parts and labor).
