The workers here trustworthy, respectful, friendly, reliable, and knowledgeable; and they offer fair prices and quick service. As a military family, we move a lot and struggle to find a mechanic we can rely on. We are thankful we found Professional Auto Diagnostics when we moved to the Hampton Roads area.

Incorrect diagnosed car with $3,500 worth of repairs for a state inspection that was not needed. Car was taken to reliable mechanic where no repairs were recommended or needed. Unsatisfied customer and will not return. Others needing inspection will be warned of this shop.

Reply from Professional Auto Diagnostics and Repairs, Inc – by michaelleech May 05, 2017

I am very sorry you're unhappy with our service. We NEVER reject cars unless they are required to be rejected by the very strict laws regulating the State Safety Inspection program. We do not make those laws, nor do we break them, and we inspect cars thoroughly- just like the State of Virginia requires. You were not rejected for 3500$ worth of work. You were rejected for a light bulb, one lower control arm bushing cracking, a twisted brake hose (from an incorrect installation by a "reliable" mechanic most likely), and objects hanging from your mirror. The inspection estimate was 838$. The rest of the recommendations were maintenance items that were due. This was explained to you and your boyfriend (who insisted he could do the work, and became upset when we pointed out that someone had already performed poor quality work) when you were here. Three of your items were easily remedied items (bulb, brake hose, objects hanging from mirror). If you managed to find an inspector that missed or doesn't care about broken control arm bushings that is his failing, not ours. We frequently see cars that have been passed that do not comply. The fact that other shops are missing items doesn't make us wrong. We try to give you ALL of the information about your car so you can make an informed investment in your transportation. We didn't pressure you into having us do the work. If we hadn't told you about your bushings, you'd have been angry when that caused a tire issue and wore out your tires, or worse, when the reduced stopping distance caused an accident. Thank you for "warning" everyone that we do our job as completely as possible- most people WANT to know as much as possible about their cars and caring for them, because they rely on the car for their daily lives.

Satisfied but labor is very exspensive

Reply from Professional Auto Diagnostics and Repairs, Inc – by michaelleech May 05, 2017

Thank you! Certified technicians are very hard to find and we must pay them a premium salary to recruit and retain them. This does make us a little more expensive, but we feel it is better value to ensure that we don't have comebacks and poorly performed repairs. On many of our "menu" items that use a GS level tech (still have to be certified, though!) instead of one of our ASE Master Techs we're able to be very competitive in the market.

I brought my mother in law's car to Mike and his crew at Professional Diagnostics to diagnose its inability to run. I am mechanically inclined perform most of my own repairs and services, the problem that was diagnosed and the repair that was recommended was exactly what was needed. The staff was extremely professional while communicating what needed to be done to make the repair.

Wife's car was taken to shop for undetermined fuel leak, transmission check, and state inspection. It was dropped off before 8am. No updates were received on the diagnosis of the vehicle and the shop called 2 times to find the status. There was no communication from the shop to the client. No work was completed on day 1 as they were trying to find the problem. By mid day 2 with no update, I went back to the shop to determine the status. A verbal estimate was given and work approved as they were waiting on a computer system repair to generate estimates, apparently. If I had not gone back to the shop, in person, it may have taken longer to provide an estimate and start work on the vehicle. An item for state inspection (mirror turn signal) was challenged as a local dealer for the vehicle was consulted and that was not an state inspection item. Reportedly, the shop consulted with their state police contact and informed that the item in question was not a rejection item. I certainly think communication from the shop to the client needs improvement to let the client know what is going on with a vehicle and what to expect as a turn around time for the vehicle. Work was completed at the conclusion of day 2.

Reply from Professional Auto Diagnostics and Repairs, Inc – by michaelleech May 05, 2017

Thank you David, for the review. Even before I'd seen this Jack and I discussed the need for better communication with customers regarding scheduling. The mirror light is an exception to the guidelines and was not noted in their manual- we now have it flagged with a sticky note so we know not to reject for those. The manual generally reads that if a light is equipped, it must be operational- we're glad to find those exceptions and note them so we can be as accurate as possible- the only way to get better is to find these items and learn from them. Regards, Mike.

by - Verified Customer April 02, 2015

I feel that their prices are too high compared to other shops, they perform too many separate diagnostics processes to hike up the price.

Reply from Professional Auto Diagnostics and Repairs, Inc – by michaelleech May 05, 2017

I am sorry that you feel this way. When there are multiple problems, multiple diagnostics must be performed or there is a strong risk of installing unnecessary parts and making unneeded repairs. The procedure to diagnose a check engine light involves testing circuits that are not linked to other systems like anti-lock brakes, or airbags. Therefore, to do those "other" diagnostics we have to charge for it, because the technician has to be paid for the circuit testing on those other items. We get many very challenging diagnostics here and cars with multiple issues. We have to charge accordingly to earn a profit and stay in business. Since diagnostic time is "by the hour" it is impossible to "beat the book" and since it does not include parts sales it is actually LOWER profit than repair work making it necessary to charge or all of the time on each car because delays on one car are not made up for by easy jobs on another car like straightforward mechanical work. Thank you for using us and reviewing us! -Mike

They do good work but the price is a little high.

Reply from Professional Auto Diagnostics and Repairs, Inc – by michaelleech May 05, 2017

Thank you for the review. We'd just raised our prices that year, as the cost of employees has risen dramatically. Many other shops locally either closed down, or raised their rates as well. We do offset our cost with as many "value-added" items as possible like our 2 year 24000 mile nationwide warranty and free shuttle in 5 miles. We find we're often cheaper or very close to others prices now- and still beat the dealer substantially.

If they are, the unit is defective and must be replaced. Radios cannot be "fixed" they are a remove and replace item. An aftermarket stereo will usually give you the most bang for your buck in terms of replacement; stock replacement radios can be extremely expensive and usually use older, lower performance technology. Just be sure to use a professional, reputable installer.

You will need a service manual, there is no way that procedure coul dbe correctly outlined in an email. This is usually best left to a professional, adjusting valves can be tricky and hard to get just right. Expect to pay 180-240$ depending on the shop, and you need to use a new valve cover gasket on reassembly. Some shops might try to cut the corner to get the price down, but then you run the risk of havin gto pull the valve cover in the future to fix a leak...

Sounds to me more like an Idle Air Control problem, but a diagnosis will 100% have to be performed. We charge about 100$, the range is 75-150 for a BMW usually. MAKE SURE YOU GET A PRO!!!

If oil is leaking out of it, it is not the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature sensor) it is probably the Oil Pressure Sending unit and it needs to be replaced.

You need a diagnosis- we charge 60.00 to troubleshoot a no-heat complaint on one of those. More likely the blend door that directs the air in the dash is not functioning correctly is the cause of the problem.

Check your owners manual, Lexuses have several fuse panels. There might be a maxifuse or fusible link out as well. If we have to troubleshoot it it would be 60.00 to check it out. Check owner's manual first.

If there is a failed component that component will have to be replaced because the system self tests itself constantly and will turn the light on and disable the system as soon as a fault is detected. Most shops will only install new from the dealer airbag parts because of liability issues.

That will end up being a timing belt, water pump, cam seals, and crank seal. Probably every bit of 800.00 or more depending on parts quality (and it DOES NOT pay to use cheap parts)

When an automatic transmission is going into Neutral intermittently it usually indicates a loss of fluid pressure from a failing pump, leaking internal seal, or problem with a fluid pressure regulator or governor. The problem is that an accurate diagnosis is very difficult to obtain without trained techs and equipment. A scan tool (not an OBDII Generic, an expensive factory compatible one like a Snap-On, Bosch or Autel) that can communicate with the transmission computer will be required, as well as potentially having to do a pressure test. Frequently a rebuild ends up being the solution, because even of the initial failure does not warrant a rebuild, the internals can be damaged from the fluid pressure losses. As a reference we charge 85$ to do a diagnosis, and of course, we will be happy to do one if you like.

Please do not use stop leak products, you run the risk of clogging other parts of the cooling system. I n my experience stop leak products do not work. You need a new radiator. We can happily install one for you, we're at 643-2559, just across the MM Tunnel in Newport News.

Then it is likely that the wiring to the alternator has a problem. You might be able to find a wiring diagram online and test to verify if the field circuit is being energized and verify if the main power and grounds to the alternator are good. However, in my experience most customers are not successful at troubleshooting and making their own electrical repairs and often end up increasing the total cost of repair by attempting them. The charge for troubleshooting the problem would be 85$. Please call James at 757-643-2559 if you'd like an appointment.

I am sure we can successfully troubleshoot your problem, however we are quite some distance from you. You might try to Google search "auto electric repair shops in Virginia Beach". Misfire symptoms and codes can be extremely challenging to troubleshoot accurately. Without a high level of knowledge and access to the correct equipment, it is very easy to misdiagnose the cause of the problem. Additionally, the installation of new parts does not eliminate those parts as a possible cause- sometimes they are not any good, either and you end up with TWO problems to try to figure out. The charge for troubleshooting those types of problems starts at 85$. If you'd like us to troubleshoot it, please call James at 643-2559. Thanks, ad good luck!

I wouldn't do a valve job on an engine with 230k on it- too much risk of having a lower engine failure soon afterwards and wasting the investment. Sounds like you have a leak, which might be worth fixing. There is no charge to take a quick look and give you an estimate on fixing it. Our number is 643-2559, and we're located in Newport News.

You are going to find it to be nearly impossible to diagnose this on your own. the Acura has an automatic climate control system on most models, and even when there is a heater control valve that is cable operated, that valve is under the dash and is inaccessible. Low heat/no heat concerns can be caused by thermostat issues, water pump issues, head gaskets, leaks, clogged heater cores, control system issues- the list goes on and on. Unless you actually know how the system works AND have access to manufacturer and vehicle specific information, it is very difficult to diagnose the system. The above poster is correct in that you need to check each heater pipe and make sure that it is hot. there is an inlet and an outlet. A correctly functioning heater that blows hot air will have an inlet temperature about 40-50 degrees warmer than the outlet. If both pipes are cool or cold, then you have a cooling system issue. If both are hot, you likely have a flow issue like a clogged core or a stuck valve or inoperative control system. You're probably best off paying for a diagnosis (we charge 90$) because even guessing wrong one time will cost you nearly that much in unneeded parts not to mention the time and frustration of making a needless repair. Call us if you need us to diagnose that for you. Professional Auto- 643-2259

The previous answer is correct but incomplete. Anything that prevents the flow of air across the heater core or hot antifreeze into the heater core can cause a no-heat condition. These situations are very challenging for customers to correctly diagnose. Our shop can diagnose this problem for you, the charge for that service is 45$. Let us know if we can help you- Prof. Auto diagnostics, 643-2559.
