The transfer case may develop a leak at the driveshaft yoke which can result in a low fluid level leading to transfer case failure. It is recommended to monitor the transfer case for leaks and repair as necessary.

There have been reports of airbags not deploying in the event of a frontal impact. Some claim that a shorted airbag wire harness can cause this to occur. Unfortunately there is no diagnoses that will isolate this problem other than fault codes stored in the airbag control module. Our technicians recommend to have any airbag light issues diagnosed and repaired in order to help ensure the airbags will deploy when needed.

Carbon buildup on the top of the pistons is common. As the buildup increases with over time, symptoms vary from light ticking, to hammering, to knocking noises. Performing a fuel injector cleaning procedure can often help the condition by removing some of the piston top deposits.

A brake pedal pulsation may be noted on brake apply. This is commonly caused by warping of the front brake rotors. Our technicians remind us that re-machining (turning) the rotors can correct this issue but the repair may last only a short time as the thinner rotors would be even more prone to warping. Replacement of faulty rotors with high quality parts is often the best option in these situations.

The manual transmission may become difficult to shift, this is commonly caused by binding between the synchronizer and the gear surface. Adding a special friction modifier to the manual transmission fluid will often correct this condition. If the problem persists revised synchronizer kits may be available.

The exterior door handles may break requiring replacement.

The front, lower ball joint may fail unexpectedly resulting in loss of vehicle control. Failed ball joints will require replacement. Our technicians recommend a complete inspection of related suspension components if this situation occurs. This should be done in order to determine if there is any other damage as a result of the ball joint failure.

It is not uncommon for wheels on these vehicles to be very easily bent or otherwise damaged, often to the point of requiring replacement. This can happen even with no apparent damage to the tire.

The door glass may be hard to roll up and/or come out of the run channel. Our technicians tell us the repair can include adjustment of the run channel, regulator to glass, regulator to door, and if necessary shimming of the window regulator.

The 80 amp fusible link for the charging system can fail and is often overlooked when diagnosing a charging system that is not working. Our technicians recommend to make sure this fusible link is OK before replacing any charging system components.

 

The power transfer unit (transfer case) and/or viscous coupling may fail due to unequal size or oversize tires. Use of incorrect or mismatched tires can cause the front and rear wheels to fight (driveline wrap-up) resulting in drive train failure. Our technicians recommend to use only matched, correctly sized tires and keep them properly inflated and rotated in order to maintain uniform tire wear.

A squeal or squeak type noise may be heard from the rear brakes on application. Our technicians tell us there is an updated rear brake pad shim kit which can help reduce this type of noise.
