A burning smell may develop due to an oil leak form one or both valve cover gaskets. Resealing the valve cover will generally correct this concern. However, the valve covers should be inspected and replaced if damaged.

A coolant leak may develop form the Intake manifold gasket causing overheating complaints. The coolant leak may be internal allowing coolant to mix with the engine oil, this condition can result in internal engine damage. Be aware that this problem is often mistaken as a blown head gasket.

The distributors can go bad and set a trouble code; they should be replaced.
Faulty glow plugs and incorrect wiring to the glow plugs have been known to cause "hard start" problems.
