The oxygen sensor can fail causing Check Engine Light illumination and the engine to run rich (burn more fuel than normal).

The spark plug wire rubber boots may get soaked with oil, causing a misfire or rough idle.

Timing gears may wear causing a mild to severe knocking noise from the front of the engine. Replacement of the timing gears is necessary.

A coolant leak may develop from the water pump. The engine may overheat as a result of the coolant loss. A leaking water pump should be replaced.

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube which connects the EGR valve to the intake manifold may develop an engine vacuum leak, causing the Check Engine Light to illuminate with code P0171 and/or P0174 stored.

On the 3.1L engines, oil leaks from the O-ring on the oil pump drive, the front crank seal, the oil pan gasket, and the oil sending unit are quite common.

It is common for the high pressure power steering rubber hoses to leak. Our technicians recommend replacing leaky rubber hoses to prevent the loss of power steering.

The display on the heater and AC control panel may become dim or go completely blank. Our technicians tell us the control panel must be replaced to correct this fault.

The intake manifold gasket may develop external engine oil leak. The manifold gasket will need to be replaced to correct this issue.

The automatic transmission shifter may fail, or a wire may break near the shifter causing the ignition key to become stuck in the ignition lock cylinder.

The catalytic converter may become plugged resulting in loss of engine power. General Motors has extended the catalytic convertor warranty on some models to 10 years or 120,000 miles. Please contact your local GM dealer to see if your vehicle is included.

The steering may develop a clunk type noise from the upper intermediate steering shaft.  Our technicians tell us that you should check with your local GM dealer to find out what the latest repair is for this condition.

A coolant leak may develop form the Intake manifold gasket causing overheating complaints. The coolant leak may be internal allowing coolant to mix with the engine oil, this condition can result in internal engine damage.

On vehicles with a 3.1L engine, the front motor mount may break, causing the engine to jump while shifting gears or accelerating; this can break the water neck (thermostat housing) resulting in coolant loss and engine overheating.
