2000 Chevrolet Malibu Question: power steering

This sounds like your drive belt has broken or come off. It drives the power steering pump (hard to turn), alternator(battery light) and the water pump (overheating).
Don't dive the vehicle to where it goes over the normal operating temperature, even for a few minutes, you can cause thousands of dollars in damage to the engine. If you look at the front of the engine, you will see that the drive belt has come off.
