Possible start replacement needed? on 2002 Nissan Maxima

Have 100k miles on maxima. had in for routine maint and tech said starter was making noise and would be good to repl now before it strands me. I have not really noticed any issues. How do I tell if it is going by the sound it makes?

If it's unusually noisy in operation, it grinds or spins freely it's got a problem and will get worse. Either take the car back and ask the guy who told you to explain it or find another Nissan specialist to hear it.
