HI, my trusty 92 camry le 2.2 liter (180,000 miles) is getting poor mpg (19) mpg (usually 30mpg)it has a very strong acrid odor from exhaust(non-sulpher or not rotten egg smell) NO check engine light and a slight idle hesitation. Car is maintained & has been tuned up @ 160,000mi.including new catilytic convertor muffler. does anyone have any ideas?? Thank you

sounds like it is not running on all 4 cylinders. have a shop check it to verify it is firing on all 4 cylinders.

i have a 92 camry and the same issue thought it was the cyl gasket but when i did a compression test it seemed fine. However, the ECU was faulty went to a scrap yard found a new one and problem was fixed.

had same problem acrid smell poor milage etc. for quite a long time. Finally changed original OXYGEN SENSOR (there is only 1 on this model) Smell is gone milage better.NOTE: fix engine lite never came on.Dealer, parts houses all said "if the check eng.lite is not on,oxg. sensor is ok" WRONG !!! I should hav changed it long ago,try your sensor but get one with new elec. plug not generic where you cut the wire. good luck.

The oxygen sensor can cause the engine to change the timing making the engine have lower fuel mileage o2 sensors can still be working just not properly! It is the cheapest route to take before you go any further and hey worst case scenerio you have a new o2 sensor in the event that the original fails to work!
