Certain electrical circuits in the airbag system are susceptible to an internal electrical short circuit. A short circuit can create excessive current flow, damaging the electrical circuit. Damaged electrical circuits could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners. This could increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash. Dealers will install a supplemental wire harness containing an electrical filter between the airbag control module and its wire harness to protect the control module from this electrical interference.
Toyota and General Motors are recalling certain models because the power window master switch assembly in some of these vehicles was built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assembly. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat. This could result in the switch melting or possibly catching fire. Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the master window switch as necessary.
Certain vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, the states of Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, or Texas are being recalled because the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, resulting in a fuel leak. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel pump module to correct this concern. The General Motors recall number is 12190.
On vehicles equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission, the tabs on the transmission shift cable end may fracture and separate. If this were to occur, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. The driver would be able to move the shifter to "Park" and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in "Park." The vehicle may not be able to be restarted and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning. Dealers will install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary. The General Motors recall number 12106.
With the front passenger seat occupied and in the full forward position, the seat position sensor will cause a 30 millisecond deployment delay between the first and second stages of the dual-stage frontal passenger airbag. In the event of a crash, this delay may result in increased head injury to certain front seat occupants. Dealers will reprogram the airbag control module software to correct this concern.
A poorly fitting driver's side floor mat may cause the gas pedal to stick at wide open throttle, causing uncontrolled acceleration. A stuck gas pedal can result in very high vehicle speeds, which may lead to a crash. General Motors will notify owners when there is a remedy for this concern. Owners are advised to remove the floor mat and place it in the trunk until the recall remedy is ready. GM recommends that no other floor mat be installed in the interim. The GM recall number is 10038.
The driver may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist. If power steering assist is lost, it would require greater driver effort to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the electric power steering motor to correct this concern. This recall is being implemented on a rolling basis beginning March 29, 2010 trough November of 2010. The General Motors recall number is 10023.
The accelerator pedal may become increasingly difficult to depress. Moisture may get into the sliding surface of the pedal lever, and the lever may deteriorate and bind. A sticking or difficult to operate accelerator causes an increased risk of a collision. Dealers will install a reinforcement bar in the accelerator pedal that will allow the pedal to operate smoothly. This recall began in early February 2010.
General Motors is recalling certain 2006–2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Ion, and Pontiac G5 vehicles registered in Arizona, Nevada, California, Florida, and Texas because of a crack that could possibly develop on the plastic supply or return port of the fuel modular reservoir assembly. This crack could cause a fuel leak that could be observed dripping onto the ground in some cases, causing a possible vehicle performance issue and a fire hazard. Dealers will replace the fuel pump module free of charge.
In extremely low temperatures, condensation in the brake booster vacuum port may freeze, causing an increase in stopping distance, which can lead to a crash. Dealers will modify the brake vacuum line free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2009. The GM recall number is 09199.
