po736 reverse incorrect ratio/po700trans.miss.control system malfunction on 2005 Hyundai Tiburon

the check engine light came on while driving. the diagnosis gave code po736 and po700. what does this mean and is it expensive to fix?

It's probably an internal mechanical failure. The code indicates an incorrect gear ratio measured verses what was expected. Hyundai does not offer overhaul or tear down information for their transmissions - so once exhausting electronic diagnostics for external controls, you are pretty much assured of replacing the assembly. Keep in mind that if you are the original owner of the car (bought it new), you have a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain - whatever comes first. See your dealer for details.
