You need to have the codes retrieved (unfortunately a scan tool is needed to retrieve the codes) once you have the code or codes stored then you can follow test and repair procedures to repair the problem. You can get a one week subscription or year subscription very cheap. The information is year make and model specific repair procedures, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect.... great quality information same as the professionals have ,much better than generic workshop manuals from parts stores, much cheaper than the factory manual try http://bit.ly/mitchell_repair_manuals_online
and get an online repair manual subscription.

When I check the recall info it does not specify VIN range, only manufacturing date:
E63, E64 (6 Series) vehicles produced up to 11/2005
Could you tell us the mfg. date, or the last 7 digit of the VIN? Are you out of the regular warranty? How many miles are in the car?
If your local dealership won't help you to resolve this problem, contact to BMW of North America and file a complaint, they are the real authority in NA and can make decision in your favor.
