The display reading "passenger air bag off" is normal. If there is a passenger in the seat weighing more than I believe forty pounds the passenger side air bag will become active and the "off" display will not be seen. Otherwise , that is passenger seat empty or occupant less than forty pounds , the "off" display is shown.
This is to prevent possible air bag deployment injury to small children as explained in your owners manual.
The display for air bag system faults is separate and should illuminate when you turn the key on and go out after the engine starts. If it remains on or comes on later there is a fault.....
